Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

DVT can be a fatal condition. Medical staff, both in Primary and Acute Care, should be aware of the symptoms and the treatment for this condition.

What Is It?

A DVT is a clot which usually forms in the deep vein in the leg. This may be caused from inability to mobilise either due to injury, illness or surgery. The lack of movement causes the blood to slow down in circulation, which may cause the blood to thicken. This can then cause a clot, which if big enough, becomes lodged in the leg vein.

Why is it Dangerous?

If the clot remains in the leg without treatment it can break away and will lodge either in the lungs which causes a Pulmonary Embolism (PE), or it will lodge in the heart, which causes a heart attack. If it is small enough, the clot will travel through the heart and lodge in one of the vessels in the brain causing a stroke. All of these are conditions which may cause serious complications and death.

What Are The Signs?

  • Swelling and pain in the calf
  • Redness to the back of the calf
  • Warm skin around the area of the clot

Who is At Risk?

Those most at risk are patients with reduced mobility due to:

  • Immobility
  • Surgery or trauma
  • Infection or acute medical illness
  • Obesity
  • Varicose veins
  • Dehydration
  • Hormone therapy
  • Cancer therapies
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Smoking

For those patients experiencing immobility in a hospital setting, prophylaxis treatment should be given in the form of:

  • A blood thinning injection such as Enoxaparin which prevents the blood thickening and forming a clot
  • Surgical measured stockings to encourage circulation
  • Encouragement to mobilise at the earliest opportunity
  • Exercises in bed to encourage circulation

How Can We Help You?

When medical treatment goes wrong, only lawyers with expert legal knowledge will do. Here at Joseph James Law we recognise the effect that a failure to diagnose a DVT/PE, or a delay in specialist treatment can have. We understand that a serious, and in some cases fatal, injury can be a severe financial, physical and psychological burden on the whole family. We understand the importance of compensation and can help you obtain a settlement that will help with any financial and future care needs that you may have.
