Urology Claims

Urology is a surgical speciality that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs (for women this is a different area of medicine, Gynaecology). Urology deals with both males and females of all ages and also covers incontinence, impotence, infertility, cancer and reconstruction of the genito-urinary tract.

Doctors who specialise in Urology are called Urologists.

Most Urological claims stem from surgery and it should be remembered that no surgery is risk free. There are benefits and risks to all surgical procedures and it is important that you are aware, not only of the general risks of surgery, but also the additional risks for the specific type of surgery undertaken.

Some people may develop complications simply as a result of the surgery itself and not as a result of any medical negligence. However, serious medical mistakes, can and do, happen.

Common Urological Claims:

  • Surgical mistakes resulting in damage to the kidneys, bladder, urethra, ureters or reproductive organs such as perforated bladder, ligated ureters
  • Failing to recognise damage to organs during surgery
  • Unnecessary removal of a kidney
  • Hernia operations leading to death of a testicle
  • Failure to diagnose testicular torsion resulting in the loss of a teste (orchidectomy)
  • Nerve damage causing erectile dysfunction
  • Incontinence following surgery
  • Vasectomy / circumcision mistakes causing damage to the testicular artery
  • Infection
  • Internal bleeding
  • Kidney stones

Kidney Disease and Renal Failure

Injuries to the ureters typically are not immediately recognised and this has life threatening consequences and can result in permanent kidney damage or removal of a kidney.

Kidneys remove waste from your body. If the Kidneys are damaged then you may require dialysis to take over their function; this is something you could need for life, as kidney disease cannot be reversed.

Common mistakes:

  • Failure to recognise injury to organs during surgery - undiagnosed damage to ureters can cause significantly reduced kidney function and nephrectomy
  • Delay in diagnosis of renal disease and kidney damage
  • The prescription of medication and the failure to monitor kidney function
  • Failing to act promptly upon test results causing impaired renal function or loss of a kidney
  • Delayed referral
  • Mismanagement of renal failure

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are very common and can develop in one or both kidneys. Most kidneys stones are small and are easily passed painlessly in the urine, but large kidney stones can cause blockages in either the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) or the urethra (the tube urine passes through on its way out of the body).

Common Mistakes:

  • Failing to investigate and treat kidney stones
  • Failing to monitor
  • Failing to assess kidney function
  • Failing to act upon test results
  • Failing to recognise stones in the bile duct
  • Delayed surgery - which could cause bile to leak from the cystic duct due to increased pressure by the presence of large stones resulting in biliary peritonitis and organ failure

Urology and Cancer

Opportunities for diagnosis and treatment can be missed by medical staff, which can seriously impact upon your ability to recover from the disease, or even survive, by:

  • Allowing the disease to develop and advance to the next stage, making a difference to your eventual outcome
  • Delaying life-saving surgery
  • Delaying the start of a course of chemotherapy
  • Reducing the chance of radiotherapy shrinking the disease

Misdiagnosis

In some cases, patients have been misdiagnosed with cancer and have undergone unnecessary and extensive surgery.
